You can wax up to 6 new chains with a 500g bag of Silca Secret Chain Wax, using one StripChip for each new chain. After a chain is initially waxed this way, you can rewax it multiple times with the same pot of wax without using another StripChip.

For new chains

Use one StripChip to remove the factory grease and wax the chain simultaneously.

Each 500g bag of wax is designed for a maximum of 6 StripChips, so you can wax 6 brand new chains.

A fresh StripChip is needed for each new chain to prevent the factory grease from damaging the wax.

For subsequent waxings

Once a chain has been waxed with a StripChip, you can put it back into the pot of wax for rewaxing without needing another StripChip.

The wax volume decreases with each use, but you can continue rewaxing the same chain repeatedly.

Silca recommends getting a new bag of wax for the 7th chain onwards, or if you plan to wax more than 6 new chains.

Does a cassette last less when chain is waxed?

No, a cassette does not last less when the chain is waxed; in fact, waxing a chain significantly increases the lifespan of the entire drivetrain, including the cassette.

The primary cause of drivetrain wear is an abrasive paste created by dirt and grit sticking to traditional oil-based lubricants. Wax, being a dry lubricant, repels dirt and grime, preventing this "sandpaper effect".

To maximize these benefits, it's crucial to thoroughly clean your entire drivetrain (cassette, chainrings, and derailleur pulleys) to remove all old oil and grease before installing your first waxed chain. If you don't, the leftover oil will contaminate the wax and reduce its effectiveness.
